Super Cheap Space Snapshots

For less than the cost of a nice SLR, you can send that nifty camera into the atmosphere! The Wired story gives the particulars about the launching of the “space camera” that was recently done by MIT students in Massachusetts. Keeping the batteries warm and functioning? Check. Having enough space for five hours of photos? Check. The camera was housed in a styrofoam beer cooler and sent via weather balloon into the upper reaches of the atmosphere – high enough to photograph the curve of the earth. The cost of the heavenly venture? A mere $148. They may not have the best pictures ever, but they certainly have the best story of how they got them!
