Is there any special tactic that you use to make the dog so “in focus” I try doing that, but I’m afraid it’s the quality of my camera?

You have to have aperture / f-stop capability on your camera. I did a really shallow field of focus (a lower aperture #) which focuses a smaller portion of the distance between me and the subject (Sadie). She is in focus, but the background is fuzzy or out of focus. A smaller aperture number makes the depth of field shallower and the larger the aperture number, the deeper your range of focus will be. Check out your camera and see if you have different f-stop or aperture settings. It’s something I really enjoy working with on my camera!

(Check out this article (toward the end) for a great explanation of aperture and depth of field: http://www.photoxels.com/tutorial_aperture.html)
