Article Review #4? (seriously, I don’t know which one we’re on anymore) – Mitchell Warren

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/08/arts/design/08penn.html

Another HUGE article, so only read if you have a lot of time.

I found this article on the front page of the New York Times.

The article describes Irving Penn as one of the most influential photographers of “fashion and the famous.”  This is due to his subject of choice, fashion.  He liked to keep things simple and his photographs spoke for themselves through the emotions portrayed by his subjects.  Penn liked to frame his subjects in full and rarely took pictures of just an individual’s face.  His technique was very fixed and planned out, which created photos that were almost never spontaneous.

Penn worked for many years with fashion magazines, including Vogue.

Check this out if you want to learn more about Penn, he did a ton of different things with photography during his life.  I only graced the surface with this post.

EDIT:  “We don’t call them shoots here.  We don’t shoot people.  It’s really a love affair.” – Irving Penn
